Dog Treats for Your Canine Cupid

The guide dog that stole your heart would love a fresh-baked treat for Valentine's Day. Below is a recipe for your beloved guide. But remember, the best way to show your love for your dog is not to overindulge when it comes to diet. So dole out these treats in moderation.

Doggie Treats with Peanut Butter

2 cups whole-wheat flour, plus some to dust the work surface
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup unsalted natural peanut butter (though regular can be used)
1 cup skim milk

Stir together the flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk until thoroughly blended. It may be easier to melt the peanut butter a little in the microwave. Stir this into flour mixture.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into shapes. Don't roll them too thin or they may over-brown. Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet.

Bake at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes. Cool on wire racks. Store in airtight container in the refrigerator. Bones should keep at least 3 weeks. Bring to room temperature before giving to your pet.
